The answer to this much asked question really is….. yes.
I remember talking to journalists when we first set up Life Change Holidays with the idea of helping people make changes in their lives during an enjoyable 7 or 14 day holiday. I realised there was a sense of disbelief, a kind of “yeah, right and the catch is…..?” The great news is, there is no catch.
For a long time the world of therapy, counselling and coaching has worked with the idea that change takes a long time and is inextricably linked to gaining insight into who we are; a process that often takes months if not years to complete. I recently met a women who “has been in therapy” for many years and worked out that over this time she has spent a staggering £55,000.
” Wow”, I think I unfortunately said this out loud as well. I was genuinely shocked though.
The point of all therapy and counselling is……change. This is what we are all after, to change, to feel better, to overcome difficulties, to have a better more enjoyable life. Surely the quicker we can make this happen the better.
Don’t get me wrong though, I’m not one to march to the other extreme, throwing the baby out with the bath water. Insight of course is important and can lead to change, but it’s equally important to know that’s its not guaranteed. Far more useful is to gain insight into what we can and what we can’t change. And this we can do very quickly indeed.
I’ve met many people over the years who have toiled long and hard in therapists offices attempting to achieve the impossible; to try and change things that are simply not changeable. This I fear takes endless time and in the worst scenarios results in a general sense of failure compounding already difficult problems. Much better to change what we can, and for things that we can’t, to learn effective coping strategies, and those we have in abundance.
